Pakistani scholar completes PhD in 3D TV technology

LAHORE ( HAFEEZ REPORT )

Shahid Farid – a lecturer at the Punjab University’s College of Information Technology (PUCIT) – has successfully defended his dissertation for PhD in the Computer Science at the Universita Degli Studi Di Torino, a well-known higher education institution in the city of Turin in the Piedmont region of north-western Italy.

He achieved this academic landmark in less than three years and with flying colours. He did his research in the general area of 3D television (3D-TV) technology. He contributed in the three sub-areas of this technology; 3D video representation and coding, virtual view synthesis, and quality assessment of 3D videos.

During his research, Farid published three papers in impact factor journals, including one in the distinguished IEEE Transaction on Image Professing (TIP). He also published six papers in top international conferences and registered two patents. Having two international patents along with several high-quality publications is certainly an unusual achievement for a PhD scholar on any scale, said Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar, principal of the College of Information Technology.
The achievement made him college’s first full-time regular faculty member, who completed his PhD degree from a foreign university. His addition increases the total number of PhD faculty at the college had grown to 16, including four Fulbright Scholars. Around 30 faculty members were currently pursuing their PhDs. There was no PhD faculty in the college when Dr Sarwar joined the college as principal in April 2006.
