ISLAMABAD ( BMZ REPORT )
Solar energy today offers energy security and independence to both businesses and individual consumers in Pakistan. With lower cost than grid electricity, smaller set up time and smoother integration with existing energy systems, the technology offers a viable solution to create a diversified and greener energy mix.
Pakistan is located on a sun-belt with potential capacity for solar photovoltaic installation at 1,600 GW, which is 40 times greater than the present consumption. Inam ur Rahman – CEO of Reon Energy Limited said, “With decreasing panel costs and the recent Climate Change talks in Paris, that has attracted massive renewable energy funding, it is imperative that Pakistan follows suit and invests itself further into these technologies. Initiatives such as the 200 Kwp solution at Wah Medical College, installed by Reon, if carefully studied and replicated, shall give phenomenal results.”
Reon Energy Limited is a part of the Dawood Hercules Group, which is the single largest contributor in the private energy sector of Pakistan in total controlling upto 1800 MW of power generation capacity with ventures like; The Hub Power Company Limited, Tenaga Generasi Limited, Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company Limited, Engro Power Gen and Laraib Energy Limited.
Initiatives of similar nature can accelerate economic growth and meet the rising energy demand. The industrial sector can install small and medium scale solutions, on-site, to make use of environmentally friendly technologies for meeting their demands. The financial and regulatory framework should be realigned to encourage investments in this sector.
