In an event of large cyber-security breach, Careem famous ride-hailing service has warned its users that their personal data has been compromised.
All those customers and captains who were registered before 14 January 2018, are exposed to data breach while, those have registered after this are not affected, explained an email statement by Careem.
At the time of the breach, 14 million customers and 558,000 captains were active on the system across 13 countries.
Sensitive information like names, email addresses, phone numbers and trip history has been stolen by hackers.
The information related to the credit card is kept in PCP-compliant server i.e. an external third party server and so far there is no evidence that password or credit card information has been compromised.
In a response to a query that, what is the origin and nature of security breach, Careem simply responded that ‘We do not know the identity of the hackers’.
Careem has recommended following steps to users to safeguard their personal information.
“Implement good password management by updating your Careem password, as well as other accounts on which you use similar details. Use a strong mix of characters, and try not to use the same password for multiple sites,” said the email statement sent to the users.
