In wake of security concerns ahead of the arrival of Nawaz Sharif today, the authorities have suspended mobile phone services in parts of Lahore. The residents had to suffer the unannounced suspension of cellular services.
The former Prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz have been convicted in Avenfield Properties Reference and they are expected to return to Pakistan today. Apparently, the government took the decision to ensure that the PMLN workers who have reached Lahore will not have the facility of communication. Consequently, they will not be able to plan any protests against the possible arrest of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
The residents are of the view that the authorities should let the people know in advance. The Government of Pakistan has beefed up the security measures in other cities as well to avoid any untoward situation. The administration has taken several steps to ensure foolproof security in the city as Lahore police as also increased the number of security personnel to cope with any untoward situation in the provincial capital and rangers have been deployed at Lahore airport.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) could not be contacted for comments despite repeated attempts. It was not just PTA that remained unavailable for comments, the cellular mobile operators also declined to share information. According to a letter that is being circulated on social media the Punjab government has requested the ministry of interior to suspend the service from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm
