President Dr. Arif Alvi on Friday asked the Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and the Leader of Opposition in the outgoing National Assembly Raja Riaz Ahmed Khan to propose a suitable person for appointment of Caretaker Prime Minister not later than today (Saturday).
In a letter to the prime minister and the opposition leader, President Dr. Arif Alvi said under Article 224A of Constitution, Prime Minister and Leader of Opposition in the outgoing National Assembly were required to propose name of a person for appointment of care-taker prime minister within three days of dissolution of National Assembly.
“Under proviso to Article 224 (1A) of the Constitution, the president appoints care-taker prime minister in consultation with Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing National Assembly”, he added.
He said the prime minister advised him on August 9 for dissolution of National Assembly under Article 58 (1) of the Constitution which he approved and dissolved the assembly on same day.
“As provided in Article 224 (1A) of Constitution of Pakistan, Prime Minister and leader of Opposition in the outgoing National Assembly may propose a suitable person for appointment of care-taker prime minister not later than August 12, 2023,” the president added.

Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has expressed confidence that the name of the caretaker Prime Minister will be finalized by today (Saturday). He said that President Dr. Arif Alvi should read the book of Constitution, adding that there is eight days time for finalizing the name of the caretaker prime minister. He said that why president is in hurry that he has written letter, adding that the president should have read the constitution prior to writing the letter. He said that there is three days time with prime minister and opposition leader for the appointment of caretaker prime minister, then there is three days time with the parliamentary committee and finally there is two days time with the Election Commission of Pakistan is appointment is not made in first two stages.
Talking to beat reporters in Islamabad on Friday, PM Shehbaz Sharif said coalition partners will be taken into confidence over the matter before taking a final decision.
To a question, the Prime Minister said the past 16 months in the government were the toughest days of his political career as the previous regime had ruined everything, including the economy and diplomatic relations of the country.
He said with the blessing of Allah Almighty and the cooperation of the coalition partners, the government remained successful in averting default, restoring Pakistan’s relations with the brotherly and friendly countries, including China, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Turkiye, and Iran.
The Prime Minister said we have established Special Investment Facilitation Council with the aim to put the country on the path of sustainable development and prosperity. He said SIFC will be a harbinger of the economic development of the country.
Journalists also thanked the Prime Minister and his team for getting passed, ‘The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2023’ from both Houses of the Parliament. They said the bill has linked government advertisements with the salaries of the media workers, which is a great and commendable step toward protecting journalists’ rights.
They further appreciated the role of former Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb for the welfare of the journalist community.
Meanwhile in an interview with a private TV channel, PM Shehbaz Sharif said that PML-N supremo Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif will return back in country next month and people will accord rousing welcome to him, adding that disqualification tenure is five years. He said that there is no bar on Nawaz Sharif as Nawaz Sharif has already completed his disqualification term. He said that the law declaring the maximum tenure of five years is in the field.
PM Shehbaz Sharif said that Nawaz Sharif will face the law after returning back to the country, adding that he has full belief that Nawaz Sharif will return back to Pakistan next month. He said that it is our duty and right of Nawaz Sharif that the nation will accord rousing welcome to him on return to Pakistan.
Replying a question, PM Shehbaz Sharif said that Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is carrying our investigation against Imran Khan regarding the cypher. He said that where it is written in the cypher that America hatched conspiracy against Pakistan, adding that the demarche was done immediately for crossing the diplomatic limits. He said that real thing that the allegation of imported government or hatching conspiracy is right or wrong.
PM Shehbaz Sharif said that if NAB and FIA are summoning Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi he has nothing to do with this matter. PM Shehbaz Sharif said that whether the courts convict Imran Khan or release him, his government has nothing to do in this matter.
PM Shehbaz Sharif said that holding of elections is not his responsibility, adding that he has quitted government on time and now it is his prayer that the elections are held soon. Shehbaz Sharif said that Nawaz Sharif will run the election camping and we all will be with him.
