Pakistan International Airlines’ fleet, originally comprising 33 aircraft, has further diminished due to technical malfunctions, leaving only 16 planes capable of flying for domestic and international routes. Among the 12 Boeing 777 aircraft, only 5 are currently operational. Sources indicate that alleged negligence in the engineering department has exacerbated the airline’s already fragile administrative condition.
Currently, out of the 33 aircraft in PIA’s fleet, only 16 are airworthy. Approximately 17 inactive aircraft remain grounded due to parts shortages, engineering checks, and other miscellaneous reasons, including several key long-haul Boeing 777s. Of the 12 Boeing 777s, 9 are owned by PIA, while the remaining 3 are leased.
Additionally, of the 16 Airbus 320 aircraft, only 10 are operational, and among the approximately 5 ATR aircraft, only 1 is flightworthy. PIA typically employs ATR aircraft on smaller routes, including destinations in the northern regions and some areas in Balochistan. Sources suggest that the PIA management lacks resources for repairing inactive aircraft and procuring spare parts, further worsening the situation.
