Indian Government Denies Hospitalization for Yasin Malik, Claims Hunger Strike Has Ended
New Delhi High Court Orders Medical Care for Yasin Malik, Further Hearing Postponed Until November 18

NEW DELHI   (  WEB   NEWS   )

The Indian government has refused to admit Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman Yasin Malik to a hospital for treatment, claiming before the New Delhi High Court that Yasin Malik has ended his hunger strike. The court was also informed that medical facilities are being provided to Yasin Malik. During a hearing, the court had previously issued a notice to the Indian investigative agency, NIA, to present Yasin Malik’s medical report, and ordered the provision of immediate medical care either at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi or in Kashmir. On Monday, during the hearing, Tihar Jail authorities told the court that Yasin Malik had ended his hunger strike. The petition was filed by Yasin Malik’s lawyer, Asad Baig. The court has postponed the hearing on the matter until November 18. As Yasin Malik’s medical report was not presented, the court directed the jail superintendent to submit his medical report again. The court also instructed the jail authorities to ensure that Yasin Malik receives medical care in accordance with jail regulations. Yasin Malik’s lawyer, Asad Baig, expressed doubt about the jail authorities’ claims and requested to visit Yasin Malik in jail. In the previous hearing, Yasin Malik’s lawyer had informed the court that the life and death of the JKLF chairman were hanging in the balance due to his deteriorating health from the hunger strike. He was reportedly unable to stand on his own, suffering from heart and kidney issues and was being kept on a stretcher. The New Delhi High Court had ordered medical assistance in response to concerns over Yasin Malik’s lack of medical care and had demanded his medical report on November 11. A notice was also issued to the NIA. It is worth noting that Yasin Malik is currently serving a life sentence in Tihar Jail in a fabricated case. He has been on a hunger strike for the past 11 days due to the denial of medical care and mistreatment by Indian authorities. Yasin Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment by an Indian court on May 25, 2022.
