Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif pledged to address the rising ‘challenge’ of digital media, particularly fake news and disinformation on social media platforms to eradicate terrorism and extremism from the country.

“On digital front, the venom against Pakistan is being spitted through social media from some elements abroad. This is also a big challenge, which is supported by distorted facts and twisted reality,” the prime minister said while chairing the meeting of the Apex Committee of National Action Plan.

The meeting was also attended by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, the federal cabinet members, chief ministers of all provinces, and other high officials.

The prime minister said that some issues are being brought up on social media by falsifying information and rewriting reality, which he said harming the state’s reputation.

He expressed confidence that the administration will overcome such obstacles, saying, “All efforts (to eliminate terrorism and extremism in the country) will go waste if we don’t counter this challenge.”

The prime minister remembered the dissemination of false information on the November 26 martyrdom of Rangers men.

He continued by saying that Pakistan will continue on its path to peace, stability, and development and that the enormous sacrifices made by the armed forces would not be in vain.

PM Shehbaz Sharif on the occasion congratulated the nation as Pakistan assumed non-permanent membership of United Nation Security Council.

He emphasized that some Khawarij intruders are living in Pakistan, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to disturb the country’s peace.

The prime minister pointed out that the agenda of prosperity and development was discussed in the previous day’s meeting where it was agreed that without bringing peace and stability in the country, economic development, was not possible.

The government, he said was determined to completely eliminate Fitna Al-Khawarij from the country to ensure socio-economic development of the country.

The prime minister stressed that the federal government, the provinces and all relevant stakeholders in collaboration with the Pakistan security forces should make a comprehensive plan in this regard. He pledged that with unity of thought and action, the government will implement such plans in letter and spirit, to resolve all challenges faced by the country.

He noted that improving law and order situation in the entire country is important to achieve the agenda of progress and development. The Prime Minister said Pakistan responded in a befitting manner to a recent cross border attack.

He said we are also cognizant of the foreign hands who are hatching conspiracies against Pakistan inside Balochistan.

Shehbaz Sharif expressed satisfaction over efforts towards increasing the capacity of counter terrorism department in provinces, saying Punjab is taking a lead in this regard.

The Prime Minister also emphasized the need for equipping police with modern equipment and ensuring merit based induction in the force.

PM Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan has assumed its responsibilities as a non permanent member of the UN Security Council saying the country will fully play its role in the international diplomacy. He also congratulated the Foreign Minister and his team for their efforts regarding the election of Pakistan as a non permament member of the UNSC with an overwhelming majority.

The Prime Minister said that the propaganda campaign and the venom being spread against Pakistan on social media is a challenge on the digital front that also needs to be countered.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur Says We Will Fight Terrorism Together to Establish Peace in Pakistan

After the meeting of the National Action Plan Apex Committee, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur stated that all provinces have decided to fight terrorism together to establish peace and order in the country, and terrorism will not be tolerated in Pakistan. He said, “Today’s meeting was crucial as we discussed the security situation in the country. All provinces have made a firm commitment to combat terrorism together. Terrorism will not be tolerated in this country.”

He also mentioned that this was the first meeting since November 26 and that he had presented his stance. “We are a political party, and the people of this country, who adopted a certain approach, have our reservations. Pakistan is our priority. We will work together to fight terrorism and ensure peace in the country.”

Ali Amin Gandapur further remarked that 13 members of the PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) have been martyred, 58 have been injured by gunshots, and 45 are still missing. “I would not have mentioned this if the Prime Minister hadn’t brought it up.”

He acknowledged the role of the military, FC (Frontier Corps), and security agencies in combating terrorism, stating that sacrifices of young soldiers are being made in this fight. “We will go to the utmost limit to eliminate terrorism and establish peace,” he affirmed.

Talking about the situation in Kurram, he stated that the meeting extensively discussed the situation in Kurram and Afghanistan. “Negotiations are conducted by the government, and if given the opportunity, we could involve the tribes in dialogue through jirgas (tribal councils). The issue in Kurram is not terrorism, but a conflict between two groups. The Kurram issue has been ongoing for over a century.”

He expressed his gratitude to all the members of the Grand Jirga who worked to resolve the matter and acknowledged the important role of local advisors in the region. “99% of the signatures for the Kurram issue have been obtained, and the remaining signatures will be completed today. The entire issue in Kurram has been resolved, and soon the routes will be opened to provide facilities to the people.”

Ali Amin Gandapur also criticized the previous government, stating, “Since the founding PTI government has ended, terrorism has spread. This is a policy matter; wrong policies give rise to such issues. Their policies were wrong before and have become even more wrong now. The policies of PDM (Pakistan Democratic Movement) in both its phases are also wrong.” He further added that the responsibility for the border lies with the military and the federal government, while his responsibility is for the settled areas, which he accepts.

He concluded by pointing out that when people cross the border, they inevitably enter cities and engage in activities. “Where are these people coming from, and how do they manage to enter the country?”
